Hello friends, today we are going to talk about how to prepare the most special party (or birthday) of the year. A book-themed party!

There are so many different ways to create a magical atmosphere, and I’m happy to tell you about them today. Reading engages millions of people every year, and fiction books and their fandoms are getting bigger and bigger.

Reading is beautiful, but when we can involve our friends in this immersive hobby, it becomes a whole other story.

I love to talk about my favorite books, and a book-themed party is the perfect opportunity to do so (because according to the moral code, guests can’t tell you to shut up ;)).

How to throw a magical book-themed party

The first thing to think about is what kind of party you have in mind.

One that focuses on the general concept of reading? Where everything is “book-themed” without picking any book in particular?

Or do you have a specific genre in mind?

  • Horror
  • Fantasy
  • Romance
  • Thriller

Or even better, do you have a specific book or saga in mind?

  • The Hunger Games
  • Harry Potter
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Percy Jackson
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Little Women

There are so many ways to create book-themed parties with decorations, themed activities, and food inspired by your favorite books.

Today, we’re going to explore a few of them together.

The party invitation

To stay on topic, you should not underestimate the importance of the invitation your guests will receive. This is where it all begins.

A good friend of mine had a wonderful Harry Potter themed party years ago and gave each guest a letter from Hogwarts. Super nice and detailed, with yellowed paper, wax stamps and a personalized letter for each of us. I still have it intact and preserved ;).

Book themed birthday party

It is easy to do something like this if you have a specific book in mind.

Every book, and especially the most famous ones, have symbols that represent them, and once you find a few, you can reuse them for anything. Decorations, food, freebies…

On the other hand, if your party is simply “book” themed, you can go for a more generic version.

For example, you could print different book covers on the front and back of your invitation. Choose one for each guest (even better if it represents that person) and write the content as if it were a preface or introduction to the story.

On the other hand, if you want to go for something simpler and faster, but effective, you can take a look at something bookish like this.

Book-Themed Birthday/Party Decor

When it comes to decorating your home before guests arrive, you are spoiled for choice. You can go big, so use all your creative skills and build real settings. You can use cardboard to create buildings and symbols from your favorite books. Or use the simplest option, book pages EVERYWHERE.

Of course, I’m not saying to cripple a poor, innocent book. Try to use photocopies, or if you really can’t, use used books that you’ve already read. If you can’t tell, I get sick just thinking about tearing pages out of a book.

Book themed decorations

Basically for decorations I recommend:

  • Search Pinterest for DIY book-themed party decorations
  • Candles EVERYWHERE
  • Book pages and covers
  • Posters
  • Create an enchanting atmosphere by transforming your space into a scene from a beloved book. For example:
    • A Mad Hatter’s tea party setting from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” with whimsical teapots, oversized playing cards (even better if you actually play with them), and mismatched chairs.
    • A vintage library ambiance with bookshelves, antique lamps, and cozy reading nooks for a classic literature-themed party.

Use quotes like there’s no tomorrow, and remember that a diffused light gives a whole different effect at a real bookish party. These keys are one of the most classic decorations, but one that, with the right uses, never ceases to surprise.

Fun Activities for Readers

There are countless activities that can engage all guests, and here I will tell you my favorites.

Meanwhile, if your party is centered around a thriller or mystery novel, the most perfect game there is is this.

This murder mystery with investigation will engage your guests for hours so it is great for a party that will last all day or even better the night.

If you want games that are a little more casual this are the best book-themed choices .

  • Diy book covers
  • Bookish Board Game for Adults and Teens
  • History game
  • Fun games for book lovers
  • Choose the darkest fanfictions of your favorite characters and read them aloud
  • Make chestnuts on the fire (sounds random but it’s super bookish admit it)
  • Encourage guests to come dressed as their favorite book characters. Award prizes for the most creative and accurate costumes.
  • Provide a photo booth with themed props for guests to take memorable pictures.

Bookish Food & Drinks

Create a menu featuring dishes and drinks inspired by your favourite books:

Book-Themed Party Food & Drinks
  • Butterbeer and pumpkin pies for Harry Potter parties.
  • “Eat Me” cookies and “Drink Me” potions for Alice in Wonderland get-togethers.
  • Hobbit-inspired feast with seed cakes, savory pies, and ale for a Lord of the Rings-themed party.
  • “Howl’s moving castle” bacon, eggs and Calcifer pastries.
  • “Narnia” Turkish delight, inspired by “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”
  • “Hunger Games” cupcakes decorated with edible bows and arrows.
  • Write the names of your fictional crushes on the pastries. I want a Cardan-themed cookie now.
