Do you remember the last time you laughed?

I don’t think you do.

Here is a reminder: Laughter is medicine. It is good for your heart and health. It also relieves stress.

We all should laugh more often. Sadly, we are so busy with work, bills, and groceries, that we forget to take the time to do so.

That’s why I am here with a suggestion. Add these books to your book club reads and witness the magic.

1. Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead: A Novel by Emily Austin

Death isn’t funny. But those who have attempted to weave humor into the grotesque theme of death deserve credit. Emily Austin is one of them.

Her book tells us the story of Gilda who is obsessed with death.

“I asked myself, “Is there anything I want right now?” and then answered “fries.” I therefore decided to buy the fries instead of killing myself because that seemed logical.”

Through a series of events, she ends up at a Catholic church as a receptionist. There, she has to hide her true identity. She learns that her predecessor Grace died mysteriously.

Lo and behold! We have a mystery at our hands.

Let me warn you, this book will not only make you laugh. It will also make you cry.

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

2. Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

Will you ever accept a murder-for-hire job for the sake of money? Maybe you will and maybe you won’t. The protagonist of this book, though, accepts the task when it comes her way.

Finlay Donovan is a single mom of two who writes murder mysteries. It’s all pretend, right? But fate has other plans and she ends up in a real-life murder story.

“My Google search history alone was probably enough to put me on a government watch list.”

If you are a mom, you’ll know all about the morning shenanigans of the kids.

The same happens with Donovan as her 2-year-old is slathered in maple syrup, her 4-year-old chops off her hair, and the nanny is nowhere to be found.

Stuff like this makes the novel relatable and funny.

3. The Martian by Andy Weir

Ever heard of nothin’ tea? The lead of this novel, Astronaut Mark Watney has nothin’ tea in the morning. It is made by adding nothin’ to hot water.

Well, leaves him no choice after he is stranded on Mars.

“I’m pretty much fucked.”

We experience the failures and triumphs with him as he tries to survive the harsh Martian climate. Comedy interweaved with high-quality science fiction… It’s just like strawberries dipped in chocolate.

Wolfsong by T.J. Klune

4. Wolfsong by T.J. Klune

This book is the one for those who love fantasy romance. Oxnard Matheson’s father makes him feel worthless and ultimately leaves.

Ox (Oxnard’s nickname) finds a friend in Joe, the son of the Bennetts, their new neighbors. Their friendship ultimately blossoms into something more but not without the horror, murder, and a malicious villain.

By the way, Bennetts are werewolves.

“I googled “what to do when your future werewolf mate/boyfriend/best friend courts you and brings you a dead rabbit.” First, there was a lot of porn. Then I found a recipe for Maltese rabbit stew. It was delicious. The stew, not the porn.”

Towards the end, parts of the book read like a sloppily written romance but hey, I am not judging you if that’s your thing.

Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon

5. Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon

This book is rom-com book for all those who are suckers for romance. Ari Abrams is a TV meteorologist. She teams up with a colleague, a sports reporter named Russell Barringer. Their goal is to fix the relationship between their bosses who are ex-husband and wife.

How’s that for a TV station drama?

“Weather connects us. A shared experience, even when we aren’t in the same place.”

If you’ve watched the Netflix movie ‘Set it Up’, you know where this is headed.

Will Ari and Russell be successful in playing Cupid or will their plan backfire? Read the book to find out.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

6. Book Lovers by Emily Henry

If you live inside books, you might wish to find ‘the one’ there. What if it’s true? What if you do find someone who also lives inside books?

“Does anyone ever want to finish a good book?”

Nora and Charlie are two peas in a pod when it comes to books. Nora is a literary agent. Charlie is an editor. They are not in each other’s best graces and their meetings are disastrous when the universe puts them in the same town.

With their banter, wit, and snark, the characters will practically force you to fall in love with them.

How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie

7. How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie

Humor comes in all shapes and sizes. A list of funny books should have some books with dark humor. So here is one for you.

Grace Bernard is in prison for a crime she didn’t commit. Interestingly, no one knows about the crimes she did commit.

And that is murdering six members of her own family. Sounds horrifying, right? Well, you might give her a pass once you hear the full story.

She was driven by revenge.

“…modern life is 75 per cent cancelling plans and both parties feeling relieved.”

Forced by prison life, Grace is writing her story for all of us to read. This satirical book also explores the themes of class disparity, justice, and equality.

Monsters by Katie May

8. Monsters by Katie May

I guess this is the adult version of Hotel Transylvania.

For Dracula’s daughter, Violet is too clumsy. And guess what happens? She is sent off to a Monster Academy so she can do a better job at it.

“I have to give the girl credit: she has balls. Or very strong ovaries.”

Does she?

Well, as luck would have it, dead bodies turn up on campus making her a prime suspect. But Violet isn’t the one to back down. She teams up with friends to solve this mystery.

The characters in the book are well-built. Their snarky humor and complex personalities are sure to draw you in.

Accidentally Amy by Lynn Painter

9. Accidentally Amy by Lynn Painter

Don’t we all wish for a romance like the movies?

Mistaken identity, stolen gazes, flirtation in the elevator. That is what happens to Isabella Shay and Blake Phillips aka Izzy and Mr. Chest.

“Izzy: Can I eat pizza in your new bed? Blake: Of course NOT.”

In her first encounter with Blake Phillips, Izzy had no idea how much of him she would be seeing again. She is in for a surprise.

If you have a thing for sappy, quirky, and cutesy romance, this book is written for you. You’ll be smiling all the way through.

Funny Feelings by Tarah DeWitt

10. Funny Feelings by Tarah DeWitt

Wouldn’t it be a dream come true to find out that the person you love loves you back?

That’s the story of Farley and Meyer. Both are pining for each other, but hiding their true feelings from one another.

Add a professional working relationship to the mix. Farley is starting her career as a stand-up comedian. Meyer is her agent.

“Nobody really knows what they’re doing. Some are just better at pretending like they do.”

As they fake date for publicity, everything they do will make you swoon. The humour is there but it is not the in-your-face kind.
